Fully Funded Positions for PhD Students in Sea Urchin Immunology
George Washington University, Washington DC, USA
The Department of Biological Sciences (www.gwu.edu/~biology) is currently recruiting PhD students for the fall semester of 2010, which includes research opportunities in sea urchin immunology under Dr. L. Courtney Smith. Financial support for PhD students is either as a Graduate Teaching Assistantship (first two years) and various Research Assistantships (last two or three years) that are currently set at US$23,000 for 9 months, including full tuition. Summer research stipends (3 months) are available from funded research from the US National Science Foundation. Interested students are encouraged to contact Dr. Smith by email (csmith@gwu.edu) before submitting an application to obtain additional information about this opportunity. A description of the research plus a list of current publications are available at http://www.gwu.edu/~biology/faculty/smith.cfm. Applications are due in January, 2010. Application procedures can be found at http://www.gwu.edu/apply/graduateprofessional.

Looking for a Postdoc Position in Developmental and Comparative Immunology.
I am looking for a postdoc position in developmental and comparative immunology. I received my PhD in July 2008 from Chinese Academy of Sciences. Now I am doing my postdoc research in University of New Mexico.
When I was a Ph. D. candidate I was interested in the innate immunity in invertebrate. My study was focused on serine proteinases and their inhibitors that are involved in the signal transduction of scallop’s innate immune response. The studies include gene cloning, gene regulation, expression and purification of their recombinant proteins and the functional studies.
During my postdoc research I studied FREP (fibrinogen-related protein) genes of freshwater snail Biomphalaria glabrata, which are thought to be involved in the snail’s resistance to schistosome parasites. I expressed recombinant proteins representing complete FREP4 gene and its two different (IgSf and FBG) domains in bacteria or yeast cells. Then I use these proteins for functional studies, trying to elucidate how the gene takes part in the snail’s resistance to schistosomes.
I am interested in the study of developmental and comparative immunology and want to look for a postdoc position in this area. I am mature, creative, highly motivated and always get on well with my colleagues. My CV is available to anyone by email or by phone. Thanks for your attention.
