A welcome to the 12th ISDCI congress in Fukuoka, Japan
It is a great honor and pleasure to welcome you in Fukuoka City, Japan, for 12th ISDCI congress in 2012 summber. Fukuoka City lies on the northern coast of Kyushu, the westernmost of the four main islands of Japan, having approximately 1.4 million people. Being the closest major city in Japan to the Korean Peninsula and China, Fukuoka has from ancient times been a gateway for economic and cultural exchanges with its Asian neighbors. Presently, Fukuoka is a safe, clean and compact city with rich nature, playing a role as the business and cultural center of the island of Kyushu.
As a representative of the local organizing committee, I would like to welcome you to the 12th ISDCI congress in Fukuoka, with sincere hospitality. We are going to make a congress plan for maximum scientific stimulation and social interactions with joy, in collaboration with ISDCI committee. We also appreciate any constructive comments and hints for the next congress from ISDCI members.
Looking forward to seeing you in 2012.
Best regards,
Miki Nakao, Kyushu University, Japan

Job offer within DFG SPP 1399
PhD position: Host-Parasite Coevolution and Immunity of Sticklebacks
We invite applications for a PhD position in the group of Animal Evolutionary Ecology at the Institute for Evolution and Biodiversity, University of Münster, Germany, http://ieb.uni-muenster.de.
With the project host-parasite coevolution will be investigated, using the three spined stickleback Gasterosteus aculeatus as a host and the cestode Schistocephalus solidus as a macroparasite. The research concept is based on comparisons of host-parasite pairs from different locations with differential evolution of parasite-virulence and host-resistance. In laboratory infection experiments, virulence traits of the parasite and immune traits of the hosts will be investigated, both, on the functional and molecular level. Excellent fish keeping facilities are available, which allow the controlled manipulation of temperature to mimic environmental change. Available techniques include micro array quantitative PCR and flow cytometry.
Applicants should have a master's degree or equivalent in biology or a related field. Background in evolutionary biology, immunology or parasitology and experience with cellular or molecular techniques are advantageous. Working language of the lab is English.
The project is supervised by Dr. Jörn Peter Scharsack and Prof. Joachim Kurtz and funded by the German Science Foundation (DFG; position according to TV-L E13/2). The project is part of the German priority program SPP 1399 on Host-Parasite Coevolution and thus includes comprehensive interactions with various research groups, e.g. for state-of-the-art genomic analyses, in particular with the Max-Planck-Institute for Evolutionary Biology and the IFM-Geomar.
Münster hosts many excellent scientific institutions and is a dynamic city with a high number of students and a rich choice of social, cultural and sporting facilities (see http://www.muenster.de/en/ for further details).
Interested candidates should send applications (preferentially as a single E-mail attachment) containing a CV, a list of publications (if available), a research statement and the addresses of two potential referees to:

POSTDOCTORAL POSITION
A postdoctoral position is available for studies on host-pathogen interactions of influenza virus in its natural avian host in the Department of Biological Sciences, University of Alberta, Edmonton, AB, Canada. The successful candidate will employ a variety of genomics and molecular biology approaches to study the genes and proteins involved in host immune responses to influenza and the application of this knowledge for development of therapeutics and vaccines. Applicants should have a PhD in immunology, virology or related discipline (obtained not more than 5 years ago), and publications in English. Highly motivated candidates with demonstrable skills in molecular biology, a strong background in immunology, virology or biochemistry are encouraged to apply. The candidate will benefit from interactions with strong research groups in comparative immunology, and virology and immunology on campus. Please send a CV, a brief description of research experience and interests, and names of 3 references.
