The 11th ISDCI Congress in Prague

The upcoming ISDCI Congress will be held in Prague from June 28 to July 4, 2009 at Hotel Diplomat (http://www.diplomathotel.cz/en/home/) so please reserve these dates in your calendar now. Note that there is a slight change in the dates for the Congress since it now starts on June 28. More information on the Congress will be placed on our website (http://www.isdci.org) soon. The organizing committee has proposed a preliminary program with symposia and workshops and soon we will invite chairpersons for these symposia. We have also invited distinguished scientists to be plenary speakers at our Congress and the following scientists have accepted to participate and present a plenary talk.

Shizuo Akira
Richard A Flavell
Elena A Levashina
Dietmar Schmucker
Christopher Secombes

We look forward to see you all in Prague next summer and we hope that all members are contributing to our society by paying the membership fees. Also, remember to encourage any new colleagues, postdocs or PhD students in your environment to join the Society. This is especially important for anyone thinking of attending the 11th International Congress in Prague next year, to enable them to take advantage of the reduced registration rates for members. Students and postdocs who join now will have the opportunity to apply for financial help from the society to attend. As previously done, priority for awards will be given to pre/post doc applicants who have been members for 6 or more months prior to the meeting. If you need more details about the Congress you can contact either me (Kenneth Soderhall@ebc.uu.se) or Martin Bilej who is the chairman of the local organizing committee (mbilej@biomed.cas.cz).

Kenneth Söderhäll
President ISDCI

Postdoctoral Position
Innate immune diversity in the purple sea urchin

Applications are invited for a postdoctoral position in the laboratory of Dr. L. Courtney Smith in the Department of Biological Sciences at the George Washington University in Washington DC. The successful candidate will investigate the set of 185/333 genes encoding a diverse set of 185/333 proteins. The cDNAs, genes and proteins from this large family show significant variation. Diversification may be the result of gene recombination plus post post-translational modifications. Possible research projects include analysis of protein function, investigations of the gene family and the diversification mechanisms of the genes and the messages, analysis of the cis promoters, RNAi knock-down of 185/333 gene expression, and single cell PCR. See www.gwu.edu/~clade/faculty/smith for recent publications.

A completed Ph.D. and experience in molecular biology is required. A background in immunology and an interest in comparative and invertebrate systems, and bioinformatics is a plus. Experience in computational analysis of large sequence data sets will be quite valuable for these studies. Salary will include benefits, with annual merit-based increases. Start date is flexible, but preferred before the end of 2008. Salary will be supported through funding from the National Science Foundation for at least two years. Applicants should submit a CV including a list of publications, a description of technological expertise (including computer-based analyses), and a list of phone and email addresses for colleagues/mentors who have agreed to submit a letter of recommendation.

Applications can be submitted either by email or regular mail and will be accepted until the position is filled.
