E-Board No. 66
March 17, 2008; Paul Gross
We are sorry to report the death, at age 46, of Paul Gross on the evening
of March 11th, following a long battle with cancer. Paul was an Associate
Professor of Biochemistry at the Medical University of South Carolina,
Director of the Genomics Core Facility at the Hollings Marine Laboratory
and a very active member of the International Society of Developmental and
Comparative Immunology. His work on the immune systems and genomics of
marine organisms (especially shrimp) was internationally known and
respected. Paul was full of life and enthusiasm and ideas, an energetic and
supportive colleague, a good friend, and a devoted husband to Mia. All who
knew him have great memories of times spent in his company, including
scientific conferences where he loved to play a leading role in both the
scientific and the social aspects. He had returned to academic life, after
a successful business career, in order to follow his dream. He gave his
utmost energy to his science and to our community of scientists, and his
passing leaves a big gap that I do not think we will ever be able to fill.
