POSTDOC POSITION
PHYSIOLOGY & IMMUNOLOGY OF MARINE ORGANISMS
Postdoctoral position is available immediately to study the integration of physiological and immunological responses to disease pathogens in shrimp, crabs and oysters. Our laboratory uses a broad array of molecular, cellular, tissue and whole animal techniques to understand the impacts of environmental change on the host:pathogen relationship in marine organisms. Applicants must have a Ph.D. in a relevant area of research. Preference will be given to candidates who have used multiple techniques to address a single scientific problem, and to individuals who can work well in a collaborative team. Training or experience in marine biology is preferred, but not required. The research laboratory is located in the Hollings Marine Laboratory (http://www.hml.noaa.gov/) at Fort Johnson in Charleston, South Carolina, a facility occupied by 5 partner institutions including the College of Charleston. This NSF/NOAA grant-funded position has a minimum duration of two years. Candidates should send a c.v. and the names of three references to Dr. Karen Burnett (burnettk@cofc.edu), College of Charleston, Grice Marine Laboratory, 205 Fort Johnson, Charleston, SC 29412. Additional information about the lab’s research and location is available at www.cofc.edu/~burnettk, www.cofc.edu/~burnettl. The College of Charleston is an equal opportunity employer.

(SHELL)FISH IMMUNOLOGY WORKSHOP
WAGENINGEN June 22-27, 2008
10th ANNIVERSARY SPECIAL PROGRAMME
The Cell Biology & Immunology (CBI) group has been organising their fish immunology / vaccination workshops annually since 1998. Typically, the workshops are characterised by one-hour presentations given by experienced lecturers, taking time to thoroughly introduce each subject. This year’s (2008) subject is (SHELL)FISH IMMUNOLOGY. We celebrate the workshop’s 10th anniversary with a special and therefore longer programme (see below). This will be done in cooperation with the IMAQUANIM technological knowledge platform for a future improved immunity to infectious pathogens in the major aquacultured species in Europe.
The 2008 workshop includes three afternoons of discussion platforms on the most recent technical advances in (shell)fish immunology. Participants will be asked to send an abstract of their research and will be given the opportunity to bring a poster. The official workshop language is English. The level of the workshop is targeting academic and company researchers as well as management staff in the aquaculture industry. In particular, we more than welcome PhD students, who have a reduced registration fee.
The number of participants is limited to 35 persons, admitted on a ‘first-come’ basis. Registration fee is 400€ (Ph.D.), 600€ (academic staff) or 700€ (company staff). For ALL-IN registration (including accommodation and all meals) add 500€ for the whole workshop period. You can find more information on registration and accommodation on our website http://www.cbi.wur.nl/uk/. Register via the website or contact us for questions via e-mail: Geert Wiegertjes, or Maria Forlenza, fish.workshop@wur.nl

8th International Congress on the Biology of Fish.
Portland, Oregon
July 28-August 1, 2008
We would like to invite ISDCI members to attend the 8th International Congress on the Biology of Fishes (http://fishbiologycongress8.usgs.gov/) to be held in Portland, OR (http://www.travelportland.com/) on July 28 through August 1. The Congress offers a unique opportunity to see a wide variety of research on the biology of fish presented by scientists from around the world. The meeting will be at the Doubletree Hotel & Executive Meeting Center Portland - Lloyd Center located only 14 km from the Portland International Airport. The MAX light rail system is available at baggage claim and will drop you off directly across the street from the hotel's front door. The social highlight of previous Congresses has been the Banquet. This Congress’s Banquet will be held at the Oregon Park Zoo (http://www.oregonzoo.org/) where you will have an afternoon to explore the animal exhibits, followed by an evening to enjoy food and entertainment that are uniquely Pacific Northwest USA.
Steve Kaattari (kaattari@vims.edu) and Greg Wiens (greg.wiens@ars.usda.gov) are co-sponsoring a symposium titled: “Immunity and Disease Resistance in Fish” and are accepting abstracts for oral and poster presentations. This session will highlight recent advances in defining innate and acquired disease resistance mechanisms, selective breeding, and immunological responsiveness to vaccination. Please contact either one directly or submit an abstract through the Congress website (http://fishbiologycongress8.usgs.gov/).
The Congress website contains more information about the meeting, symposia, Portland, Oregon and how to proceed with registration. Graduate student and post-doc travel awards are available; please see the Congress website and follow one of several links to the abstract submission site for instructions.
We look forward to seeing you in Portland, OR later this summer.
Sincerely,
Stephen Kaattari
