In Memoriam
Lester William Clem 1934-2006
Lester William Clem, known to most people as Bill Clem, died in his sleep on November 9, 2006. Bill was a past President of the International Society of Developmental and Comparative Immunology (1991-1994), and a Co-editor in Chief of our journal Developmental and Comparative Imunology (since 1993) and was active as an editor up to his death.
Bill started his scientific career at the University of Delaware where he undertook his MSc studies. He then moved to the University of Miami for his PhD, under the supervision of Mike Sigel. Following three years as a Research Associate at the Variety Childrens Research Foundation in Miami, in 1966 Bill took a faculty position at the Department of Microbiology, University of Florida at Gaineseville, where he quickly rose through the ranks to Full Professor. In 1979 he was appointed to the chair of Microbiology at the University of Mississippi Medical Center, Jackson, a post he retained to his retirement in 2004.
Bill is well known to most immunologists worldwide for his important contributions to fish immunology. He built a center of excellence for fish immunology in Jackson and attracted many excellent young scientists who started their career with him. His prolific activity is evidenced in the 180 papers and 22 book chapters/ review articles written over his career, many of which have become classic fish immunology texts.
Bill served as editor or editorial board member on several prestigious journals, including J.Immunology, Molecular Immunology and Infection & Immunity. He also received many honours and awards, including an NIH Merit award and the Frederick Barnard Distinquished Professorship at the University of Mississippi. Such awards and international comittments reflected his very high international standing and reputation as an excellent scientist and mentor.
He is deeply mourned by his wife Churchill McKinney and his family and all his friends.
