E-Board No. 33
ISDCI E-Board 33 August-Sept 05
ISDCI E-Board Number 33
August 2005
Dear ISDCI Colleagues
MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
Greg Warr and his team are well on their way with the organisation of our
10th conference in July next year. We have already secured some excellent
plenary speakers, with the likes of Stefan Beck, Bruce Beutler, Louis
DuPasquier, Fotis Kafatos and Margaret McFall-Ngai. Now is the time for
all of our membership to get involved with promoting and participating in
the event. It really is crucial for the Society's existence that we get a
good turn out at our conferences. So please make every effort to be
there, and to suggest to colleagues they attend. We will advertise as
widely as possible, but any help to reach an even wider audience would be
much appreciated. Similarly, if you know of possible sponsors let us
know. We are writing to NIH and NSF for support but commercial sponsors
are also to be welcomed, with the potential to advertise their wares on
site during the week. The Society web page (http://www.isdci.org)
contains up to date information on costs and the preliminary programme.
Please take a moment to look at this now and put all relevant
dates/deadlines in your diaries. I am sure this conference will be our
best yet, and I look forward to seeing you all in Charleston.
Chris Secombes.
IMMUNOLOGY FACULTY POSITIONS: LONDON, UK
The Cancer Research UK London Research Institute (formerly Imperial Cancer Research Fund) wishes to recruit talented immunologists to establish internationally competitive research programmes in London. We are particularly interested in immunologists working in the areas of T cell and innate immunity including Th differentiation, cytotoxic T cell responses, tumour immunology, innate recognition and NK cell biology. However, the main criterion for selection will be scientific excellence and consideration may be given to other areas of immunology.
All levels of appointment will be considered, from six year tenure-track faculty to established scientists.
The LRI offers superb research facilities in central London, supporting around 50 research groups. Newly appointed scientists are given generous start-up packages including staff positions. Research groups at the LRI are core funded by Cancer Research UK and receive an annual budget that covers most research expenses and access to many support services including animal facilities, flow cytometry with high-speed sorting, confocal and video microscopy, peptide and oligonucleotide synthesis, DNA sequencing and antibody production.
Please distribute this e:Mail, and the attached advertisement, to any interested parties and post it prominently at your institution. Thank you for your help.
Further information can be obtained from anyof the people below.

UNIVERSITY OF EDINBURGH
SCHOOL OF BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES
INSTITUTE FOR IMMUNOLOGY & INFECTION RESEARCH
The Institute for Immunology & Infection Research (IIIR) has recently extended its research lab capacity with the opening of a new building (Centre for Infection Biology & Immunology), largely funded by the Wellcome Trust. Space is now available to recruit new groups. Existing faculty include Rick Maizels (immunity to helminth parasites), David Gray (immune memory and regulation), Steve Anderton (tolerance and autoimmunity), Judi Allen (immunity to helminth parasites), Andrew Read (host-parasite evolutionary biology), Mark Woolhouse (animal disease epidemiology), Richard Carter (malaria immunity), Alex Rowe (malaria host-parasite interactions), Andrew MacDonald (immunity to Schistosomes), Keith Matthews (cell biology of trypanosomes), David Arnot (malaria molecular biology and vaccines), David Cavanagh/Jana McBride (malaria vaccines), Tom Little (invertebrate immune protection), Joanne Thompson (cell biology of plasmodium), Andrea Graham (evolutionary immunopathology). The next development on the site is a new building to accommodate the Centre for Infectious Diseases incorporating groups from the Medical and Veterinary Schools. Further information about IIIR research can be found at http://www.3IR.org.uk (interim web site).
Recruitment: We are now seeking outstanding investigators at all levels, who wish to join this excitingenvironment and interact with these existing groups. We are interested at this time in scientists working in basic immunology and the immunology of infection, although this is not to the exclusion of those working in areas such as pathogen genetics, cell biology and genome-orientated strategies to understand the infection process. We would like to attract both established research leaders and more junior scientists building their careers, who are able to win competitive Research Fellowship funding from external sources.
Written applications containing a CV and summary of research plans should be submitted over the coming months (to end of 2005). Informal enquiries are welcome and may be made to:
Professor David Gray (tel. –44 131 650 5500 or e-mail: d.gray@ed.ac.uk) or
Professor Rick Maizels (tel. –44 131 650 5511 or e-mail: rick.maizels@ed.ac.uk)

POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCH ASSOCIATE
The Marine and Freshwater Biomedical Sciences Center at Oregon State University seeks candidates for a postdoctoral position in Functional Genomics of Aquatic Models. Start date can be as early as December 1, 2005 (negotiable). Working on NIH-funded projects in the Chris Bayne (Zoology) and David Williams (Environmental and Molecular Toxicology) labs, the appointee will use transcriptional profiling and other approaches in studies of carcinogenesis, immunoparasitology and toxicogenomics. The work will require development of independent expertise in DNA array technology, but will also complement other projects, so an interest in cross-disciplinary collaboration is desirable. Required qualifications include a Ph.D. in evolutionary/molecular/cell biology, immunology, toxicology, genetics, or a related discipline. Interests including innate immunity, and experience with bioinformatic methods are favored. Complete job description available at <http://oregonstate.edu/jobs>http://oregonstate.edu/jobs . For full consideration apply by September 30, 2005. Email a letter of application, CV, statement of research interests and qualifications, and contact information for three references to: Dr. Christopher J. Bayne,
baynec@science.oregonstate.edu>baynec@science.oregonstate.edu (Dept. of Zoology, OSU, Corvallis OR 97331). OSU is an Affirmative Action and Equal Opportunity Employer.
