E-Board No. 105

November 11, 2011

Dear Colleagues

I am in the midst of re-writing the evolution chapter for 'Fundamental Immunology.' I am requesting that you send me PDFs of your latest reviews and papers "that you're mostproud of." Try to be selective so that my computer does not explode, i.e. limit yourself to one or two reviews and no more than your top three primary papers. I already have most of your work; however, while I am nearly perfect, deficiencies, albeit they minor ones, remain. My review is due in January.

Thank you for your help.

Uppsala University hereby declares the following positions to be open for application:

2 PhD student positions in Innate Immunity in a crustacean at the Department of Comparative Physiology,Uppsala University.

Two PhD student positions in Plant Ecology is available at the Department of Comparative Physiology, Evolutionary Biology Centre, Uppsala University. Starting as soon as possible.

Melanization; the proPO-activating system in immunity. During recent years the regulation and functionof this system in innate immune reactions have been studied in detail in freshwater crayfish. This project aims to focus on the role of different components of this system in crayfish and its important for WSSV replication. The other project will focus on the molecular details of hematopoiesis in crayfish. During recent years we have focused on this type of studies and published several studies on different factors and their involvement in hematopoiesis. The successful candidate will settle the exact profiles of her/his PhD project together with the supervisor, Professor Kenneth Söderhäll and Head of the Department of Organismal Biology Irene Söderhäll, respectively.

The successful candidate should have a keen interest in innate immunity, and ideally experience from previous work on molecular immunology and molecular cell biology.

Successful candidates for these positions should have a masters or honors thesis in a molecular biology orinted subject. Proficiency in English is a requirement.

The candidate will receive her/his postgraduate training within the postgraduate school at the Evolutionary Biology Centre (see http://www.ebc.uu.se/?languageId=1 ). The postgraduate training comprises four years of full time studies. The successful candidate will receive a postgraduate fellowship the first year (15500 SEK/month) and a postgraduate position year 2-4 (22400-25100 SEK/month). The position can be combined with up to 10% of teaching assistantship, which will then prolong the position accordingly.

The application should include a letter of intent describing yourself, your undergraduate training, research interests and your research experience if any, and why the position is of interest. It should further include Curriculum vitae, an authorized copy of the undergraduate degree, and the names and contact information (address, email address, and phone number) of two reference persons. Relevant publications (including BSc/MSc thesis) should be enclosed.

For more information please contact Kenneth Söderhäll or Irene Söderhäll (Ph. +46 18 471 28 18 or +46 18 471 2817, Kenneth.Soderhall@ebc.uu.se, Irene.Soderhall@ebc.uu.se) for more information. Trade union representatives are, Anders Grundström, Saco Council, Ph. +46 18 471 33 80, Carin Söderhäll, ST-ATF, Ph. +46 18 471 19 96 and Stefan Djurström, Seko, Ph. +46 18 471 33 15.

You are welcome to submit your application no later than February 1, 2012 to Kenneth or Irene Söderhäll.
